It is expected that Apple’s first foldable smartphone will be a qualitative leap in the design of its products, and this step is considered a calculated entry, albeit late, into the market for advanced phones.
After years of unconfirmed news, the latest leaks have rekindled talk about the foldable phone, indicating that Apple may adopt a design that opens like a book, with a large screen on the inside, an approach that competing companies have taken in recent years.
According to what is being circulated, the phone will contain two screens: an external screen of approximately 5.5 inches, and an internal screen that reaches approximately 7.8 inches when opened, making it a device that combines the characteristics of a phone and a tablet. The leaks also indicate a relatively slim design, with a thickness of about 9 millimeters when folded.
Regarding photography, Apple is expected to maintain the dual-camera system on the back inside a rectangular unit, which indicates that it will not abandon one of the most prominent elements that distinguish its devices, even with the transition to a completely new design.
In contrast, the issue of the appearance of a crease in the screen at the folding point remains a technical challenge. Leaks indicate that Apple is working on experimenting with solutions related to hinges and external glass, but it has not yet been confirmed that it will be able to completely eliminate this problem.
As for the launch date, estimates indicate the fall of 2026, coinciding with the “iPhone 18” series, with expectations that the device will start at about $2,000, making it among the highest priced in the market.
The biggest challenge remains Apple’s ability to convince consumers of the value of this phone, in a market where foldable devices still suffer from problems related to durability and hinge life, in addition to strong competition from Samsung and Google.
