Kirill Dmitriev, Special Envoy of Russian President Vladimir Putin, stated that the world “praises the efforts” made by US President Donald Trump to achieve peace, following Trump’s meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
In a post on the “X” platform, Dmitriev, who is also the Russian Special Envoy for Investment and Economic Cooperation with Foreign Countries, stated: “The whole world appreciates the efforts of President Trump and his team for peace.”
This statement is considered the first Russian reaction to the meeting between Trump and Zelensky in Florida, which focused on discussing ways to end the war in Ukraine.
Trump stated on Sunday, after the meeting, that the results of negotiations on a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia may become clear in the coming weeks.
During a press conference held after his meeting with Zelensky, he explained: “I think we will know in a matter of weeks, one way or the other” whether the talks have made progress, noting that the negotiations were “very difficult.”
However, the US President affirmed that “significant progress” had been made in the talks with Zelensky, explaining: “We are getting very close, and maybe very close to ending the war.”
Trump also pointed out that Ukraine and Russia are getting closer to reaching a settlement on the disputed Donbas region, but he indicated that it still represents a challenge.
In response to a question about the Donbas region, he answered: “The solution has not come yet, but it is getting closer and closer. It is a very thorny issue, but I think it will be resolved.”
It is worth noting that Trump had previously stated that he believes that both Zelensky and Putin are “serious” in their pursuit of peace.
