Bloomberg reported, citing informed sources, that the White House plans to announce its intention to involve the private sector in efforts to combat cyber intruders affiliated with foreign countries, as part of the new national cybersecurity strategy that has been reviewed by officials and experts in this field.
According to the sources, the US National Cyber Security Office is expected to reveal this strategy in the next few days.
The draft indicates the need to enable the federal government for private companies in its endeavor to impose penalties on foreign adversaries who breach critical infrastructure and communications networks, or disrupt operations through ransomware attacks.
However, the draft did not include additional details on the mechanism the administration will follow in using these companies.
Bloomberg clarified that this step may contribute to expanding the scope of cyber warfare, which is often carried out secretly by secret intelligence agencies.
The administration is expected to provide additional details after the strategy is published, and it may be accompanied by an executive order or laws defining the roles of private companies, according to sources familiar with the matter.
