The source, an official in the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, stated that the deal will be officially announced during the coming week. He pointed out that importing these shipments comes as part of the state’s plan to ensure the continued flow of gas and not fall under any external influences.
The source stressed that this agreement is in line with the strategy followed to diversify gas import sources, in order to avoid relying on only one source. In this context, some reports expected this deal to be with Qatar, but its details have not been disclosed yet.
It is worth mentioning that the Egyptian Minister of Petroleum, “Karim Badawi,” visited Doha last May, where he discussed with Qatari officials accelerating the pace of implementation of joint projects in the field of gas, concluding long-term agreements to supply natural gas, in addition to developing cooperation in the areas of exploration, discovery, and increasing the volume of production.
This trend comes in light of Israeli reports that spoke of the Israeli government’s continued freezing of approval of the gas deal with Egypt worth “$35 billion,” in the context of political pressure related to Cairo’s positions on the war on Gaza, which prompted Egypt to look for alternative solutions.
The Israeli Channel “12” indicated that the gas import deal from the “Leviathan” field is facing the risk of failure, which opened the door for Qatar to become a potential supplier.
