Real Madrid C.F. v Manchester City - UEFA Champions League 2025/26 League Phase MD6

Xabi Alonso, the coach of Real Madrid, commented on his situation in the team in light of the disappointing results, following the 2-1 defeat against Manchester City in the sixth round of the Champions League group stage.

Spanish press reports had indicated that Alonso’s fate with the team could be determined by losing to Manchester City, especially after the defeat to Celta Vigo in the Spanish League, but the coach commented on those speculations.

In the press conference that followed the match, Alonso was asked about his future, and he replied: “The matter is not about me, what concerns me is Real Madrid’s next match, and that is the most important thing.”

Real Madrid is preparing to face Deportivo Alavés away from home in the Spanish League next Sunday.

Regarding today’s match, he explained: “I have nothing to blame anyone for. We started the match wonderfully, but in some moments any mistake is difficult to deal with, and in ten minutes they were able to advance. We were unable to control that stage, yet we regained control until the end, but we lacked the final touch.”

The coach pointed out the difficulties the team is facing due to the large number of injuries, stressing that this has affected the team’s strength, and said: “When you are going through a critical moment and with this large number of injuries, you feel that the team is less solid. City turned the result around quickly, not because we performed poorly, but because what we offered was enough for them. We had opportunities, but we failed to translate them into goals.”

Regarding the fans’ boos, Alonso said: “There were some boos, but also a lot of applause. I don’t blame anyone, the fans are expressing their feelings.”

He added: “Rodrygo hugged me after the match, and that made me very happy. He played a great match, he was decisive, skillful and scored an important goal. One of the best news today is the closeness of the players to each other, and together we will turn the situation around.”
