
The meeting was attended by representatives of the Mediterranean countries, in addition to the European Union, the World Bank, the FAO, the Grain Council for North and East Africa, and the “CIHEAM” Montpellier Institute. The meeting formed a platform to discuss the difficulties facing food security in light of the current global crises.
In his speech, “Lahoud” thanked Egypt for hosting this event, conveyed the greetings of the Minister of Agriculture “Nizar Hani,” and gave a detailed presentation on the situation of the grain sector in Lebanon, addressing aspects of production, consumption, and import, in addition to food security indicators.
He also highlighted the most important challenges facing the sector, foremost among them the economic crisis, climate change, the decline in areas planted with wheat, as well as the disruption of supply chains.
He stressed that the ministry’s priorities include expanding the scope of wheat cultivation, adopting resistant varieties, improving irrigation systems, providing support to farmers, strengthening market monitoring, and developing partnership with the private sector.
He concluded his speech by emphasizing Lebanon’s commitment to enhancing food security through cooperation with regional and international partners.
