الجنائية الدولية تقضي بسجن علي كوشيب عقدين

The International Criminal Court announced on Tuesday a twenty-year prison sentence for “Ali Muhammad Ali Abd al-Rahman,” known as “Ali Kushayb,” a prominent leader of armed groups in Darfur, Sudan. This ruling comes after his conviction for committing serious crimes during the conflict in the region.

“Kushayb” was convicted last October on multiple counts, reaching twenty-seven charges related to war crimes and crimes against humanity, including acts of violence and widespread violations witnessed in Darfur more than twenty years ago.

The roots of the war in the region date back to 2003, which resulted in heavy losses of life and the displacement of millions of people. During that period, accusations were made of using local armed groups to support government military operations.

Who is “Ali Kushayb”?

* Born in 1949
* He is considered one of the well-known tribal leaders in the Wadi Salih area
* He had a role in the Popular Defense Forces
* He led large armed groups that participated in acts of violence during the conflict
* He played a pivotal role in recruiting local groups for the government during that period

The ruling issued today is considered the first of its kind for the International Criminal Court regarding the events in Darfur, in light of continuous international demands to hold accountable all those involved in these violations.
