In statements to American media, Herzog explained that any preemptive pardon must be studied objectively, asserting that “there are many issues that must be discussed between equality before the law and the specific circumstances of each case,” according to The Times of Israel.
He also noted his appreciation for Donald Trump’s friendship and opinion, explaining that the United States provided assistance to Israel in recovering hostages thanks to his efforts. However, he emphasized that commitment to Israeli law is non-negotiable.
In a related context, Israeli Channel 13 previously quoted Herzog as saying that he “will consider only the interests of the state and Israeli society,” in response to Netanyahu’s request for a pardon.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu officially requested a pardon from President Herzog. In a statement issued by Netanyahu’s office, it was announced that “the request for a pardon for Netanyahu has been transferred to the pardon department in the Ministry of Justice,” noting that “the Israeli President will consider the request after reviewing the legal opinions.”
It is worth mentioning that Netanyahu leads the “Likud” party, which is considered one of the largest right-wing parties in Israel. He has served as Prime Minister for the longest period, exceeding 18 years since 1996, but intermittently, and the current term is his third.
The “Likud” party achieved a victory in the last Knesset elections, winning 32 seats, in addition to 18 seats for its allies from the “Haredim” parties, and 14 seats for the Religious Zionist alliance, a record number for the extreme right.
On the other hand, Netanyahu faces charges of corruption, bribery, and breach of trust in three cases known as files “1000,” “2000,” and “4000.” His trial in these cases began in May 2020, where he denies these accusations and asserts that they are “a political campaign aimed at overthrowing him.”
In addition to his trial locally, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu on November 21, 2024, on charges of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity against Palestinians in Gaza.
