زلزال وشيك... عالم زلازل تركي يحذر من "وهم الهدوء"

The Turkish seismologist “Naci Görür” warned the authorities in his country against continuing to ignore the seismic risks, after repeatedly warning of the possibility of a devastating earthquake in Istanbul.

The scientist stressed that the apparent calm in seismic activity should not create a false sense of security. “Görür” wrote on the X platform: “Discussions about the threat usually subside in periods when earthquakes are less frequent. It is precisely during such periods that preventive measures must be intensified.”

The professor explained that most regions of the country are threatened by seismic activity, and that the consequences of any strong earthquake could be catastrophic.

He also called for an end to the debate about where and when the next earthquake will occur, considering that the question should be asked in a different form: how to avoid human losses through a pre-equipped infrastructure. According to the seismologist, every new tragedy “becomes an unforgivable omission.”

The scientist also suggested creating “earthquake-resistant cities.” “Görür” pointed out that the issue relates to a comprehensive methodology that includes: strengthening management systems, raising awareness among the population, modernizing infrastructure, renovating residential buildings, protecting the environment, and enhancing economic resilience.

The professor concluded by emphasizing that achieving this goal can only be achieved through the concerted efforts of the central government, local administrations, and citizens.
