"Doomsday Radio": Sixth Message Broadcast Mentions NATO Country for First Time

The famous Russian radio station UVB-76, known as “The Buzzer” or “The Doomsday Radio,” broadcast its sixth message today, this time including the name of Latvia, one of the NATO countries bordering Russia.

According to the UVB-76 Logs channel, which specializes in tracking the station’s activity, the radio broadcast the following message at 14:40 Moscow time: “НЖТИ 15854 ЛАТВИЯ 5894 4167” (NZHTI 15854 LATVIA 5894 4167), where the name Latvia clearly appeared among the encrypted letters and numbers. This is the first appearance of this country in the station’s broadcast.

Observers have recently noted that UVB-76 has begun rebroadcasting messages that it sent before the start of the Russian military operation in Ukraine in 2022. On November 17, it repeated words such as “жеребость” (a word related to horse breeding), “оцинковщик” (an industrial term), “лесолед” (a natural phenomenon in cold weather), “болонский” (from the city of Bologna or Bolognese), and “пошлый” (a description with a negative meaning). On November 13, it repeated the word “rzhavlenye” which was broadcast on February 19, 2022.

The UVB-76 station has been operating since the 1970s and is famous for broadcasting a continuous “buzzing” signal that earned it the nickname “The Buzzer”. It is believed to be part of an emergency communications system established in the Soviet era during the height of the Cold War, and it is estimated that Russia still uses it for military or intelligence purposes.

The exact meaning of these messages remains unclear, while the interest of international observers in the station’s activity is increasing, especially during periods of geopolitical escalation.
