Hours before arriving in Beirut at the head of a delegation from the U.S. Treasury Department on a regional tour, Nelson explained that the United States seeks to exploit a “golden opportunity” in Lebanon that allows it to “cut off Iranian funding to the party and pressure it to lay down its arms.”
These statements coincide with increased financial and military pressure on the party, and the American moves converge with Egyptian and United Nations efforts to reactivate the ceasefire mechanism on the Lebanese-Israeli border.
In a related context, a Lebanese source revealed to the Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper that the Lebanese government has prepared an official response to the ideas presented by the Director of Egyptian Intelligence, Major General Hassan Rashad, stressing that the agreement to cease hostilities is being implemented precisely by the Lebanese side, and that “the responsibility lies with Israel, which refuses to abide by it, and there is no need to reach a new agreement.”
The source also indicated that the Director-General of General Security, Major General Hassan Shaker, was officially tasked with conveying the Lebanese position to Major General Rashad during the meetings held in Cairo.
