Google announced a new update in the “Google Maps” application that allows users to download maps in advance and use them in offline mode. This step aims to facilitate navigation in areas with limited network coverage and improve the experience of travelers around the world.

This feature comes as part of Google’s efforts to enhance the application’s flexibility and reliability. Users can select specific areas of the map and store them on their phones for use at any time, even while traveling or when the network connection is interrupted.

To activate this feature, open the application, then click on the account picture in the upper corner and select “Offline Maps,” then “Select Your Own Map” to select the desired area, and finally click “Download” to save it on the device. Once the download is complete, the map can be fully browsed without the need for the Internet, provided that the route does not exceed the boundaries of the downloaded area.

Saved maps clearly show all streets and landmarks, and allow directions to be determined via the “GPS” system even in airplane mode or in mountainous areas. However, some services such as live traffic data, public transport and bicycles remain unavailable, as they require an Internet connection to be constantly updated.

Google advises users to download maps via “Wi-Fi” to avoid consuming phone data, and to update them periodically to ensure their accuracy, as they may expire after a period.

The company confirms that this feature represents an additional step towards making navigation easier and more efficient, even in the event of a complete network outage, making it an ideal tool for travelers to remote areas or for those who prefer to rationalize Internet consumption during their travels.
