The Russian government has announced a temporary ban on the export of certain types of industrial sulfur, a key element in the production of mineral fertilizers, in order to stabilize the domestic market and ensure the continuation of current production operations, according to a statement issued by the “Russian Council of Ministers”.

This ban includes sulfur in its liquid, granular, and lumpy forms, and will be effective until December 31, 2025, with specific exceptions including exports to member states of the “Eurasian Economic Union”, “Abkhazia” and “South Ossetia”, in addition to humanitarian shipments and international aid.

Russia is one of the largest sulfur producing countries in the world, with production reaching approximately 5.6 million tons in 2024. The majority of this production comes from gas processing plants, while the remaining quantity is extracted from oil. Global sulfur production reached 83 million tons in 2021, with “China”, “United States” and “Saudi Arabia” topping the list of producing countries, followed by “Russia” and “United Arab Emirates”.
