President Joseph Aoun’s request to the army command to confront any Israeli intrusion into southern territories sets a new field equation in the south, within the framework of confronting the ongoing violations of the ceasefire agreement, and represents a significant development on the political and diplomatic fronts.
It is self-evident that the mission of national armies lies in defending sovereignty and land against any aggression, and under the “confrontation” decision, the Lebanese army will take immediate action in the event of any Israeli incursion, without the need for any prior coordination with the military committee concerned with monitoring Israeli aggressions.
In an analysis of the presidential decision, the former head of the negotiating delegation on the southern borders, retired Major General Abdul Rahman Shhaitly, stated to , that the Blida incident “may be the main driver of the decision taken by the President of the Republic yesterday, and he knew that he would take it one day, and therefore, after what happened in Blida, the situation became unbearable to the point that he could no longer delay in taking such a decision.”
In response to a question about the field situation after the “confrontation” decision, Major General Shhaitly expected the Lebanese army to respond if the Israeli army stormed any border area again, and to engage with it.
Shhaitly affirmed that “our soldiers are not afraid,” and they have previously clashed with the Israeli army, and despite the great disparity in capabilities between the two armies, they will not hesitate to engage with it in the event of an incursion or approaching army centers, or threatening the Lebanese army, because the army will carry out the mission of defending itself and the land, no matter the sacrifices.
Regarding how to implement the presidential decision “on the ground,” Shhaitly explained that “the officer or soldier on the ground, regardless of any other data, will act immediately and respond to the attack,” expressing his full confidence that this will happen.
