WhatsApp has announced a more secure mechanism for accessing encrypted chat backups, through support for Passkeys.

This new feature allows for easy and convenient restoration of backups when a phone is lost, using fingerprint, facial recognition, or a lock code, eliminating the need for users to memorize complex passwords or long keys.

It is worth mentioning that in 2021, WhatsApp launched the end-to-end encryption feature for backups using passwords or 64-character keys, but it required manual saving to restore the data, according to a report published by TechCrunch.

The passkeys feature comes to simplify this process and enhance security with an additional layer.

The company, whose active user base exceeded 3 billion last May, indicated that this feature will begin rolling out to users gradually over the coming weeks.

To enable encrypted backups or check the availability of passkeys, you can follow these steps: Settings > Chats > Chat Backup > End-to-end Encrypted Backup. (Arabic)
