In the wake of his team’s painful 0-3 defeat at home at “Anfield” against Crystal Palace in the round of 16 of the English League Cup, the frustration was evident on the face of Liverpool’s Dutch coach, Arne Slot.
Liverpool’s performance seems to have declined significantly this season, with losses piling up and putting the Dutch coach in an unenviable position, especially after only five months since winning the English Premier League title in his first season with the team.
In statements to the “BBC,” Slot said: “There are many possibilities that can explain what is happening, but the truth is that there are not enough justifications for losing five out of six games. There is no single reason that can explain this decline, but it is clear that in recent weeks we have had to play only two days after playing difficult European matches.”
He added: “Next week will be very important for all of us, so we need as many players ready as possible. Everyone can notice from the lineup I chose today that I had to rest some players who participated extensively in recent matches. This is the lineup we currently have, and it reflects the fact that we are suffering from some injuries.”
The Dutch coach also explained his philosophy in the tournament, after including a large number of reserve players, saying: “The club has always given young players the opportunity in the League Cup, and our squad is not as big as some think. Our approach to this tournament or in dealing with the pressure of matches has not changed.”
: Oliver Glasner: “A deserved victory despite a slow start”
For his part, Austrian Oliver Glasner, the coach of Crystal Palace, expressed his happiness with the victory, saying: “It is a good victory. It took us 15 minutes to get into the atmosphere of the match, after which we played well, scored beautiful goals, and controlled the match. It is not usual to face the champion of the competition three times in three months (“Charity Shield,” “League,” and “League Cup”) and win against him every time, so the credit goes to the players.”
He spoke about Liverpool’s lineup, saying: “We did not know who would start the match. “Andy Robertson,” “Endo,” “Tsimikas,” and “Mac Allister,” who is a world champion, participated, along with some young players such as “Rio Nyomoh,” who proved his ability to score. We did not start the match well, we felt like we were still in the hotel, but then the performance improved and we scored beautiful goals. The performance was good, but it was not great.”
: Stephen Warnock: “The pressure is mounting”
As for former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock, he saw that the defeat increases the pressure on Slot, saying via the “BBC”: “Liverpool is trying to find solutions, and the fans will give Slot some time, but people are short-sighted and quickly forget what was good last season. If the results do not improve soon, the anxiety will start to increase.”
He added: “There was a fan behind us who was very angry with the performance, and he started shouting, addressing Slot, saying: “This is unacceptable – we are Liverpool.” I think this result increases the pressure on the coach and will make the questions about him more.”
He continued: “Confidence is a crucial element in football. When you see the way Liverpool players play now, you realize that they doubt their decisions and play with hesitation and negativity. When we looked at Liverpool’s squad at the beginning of the season, we felt that the starting lineup might be the strongest in the league, but what do they have on the bench? We saw tonight that the depth is not as we thought.”
Liverpool’s heavy loss to Crystal Palace is not just an exit from a local tournament, but a clear indication of a crisis of confidence and a lack of technical stability within the team. Slot’s statements reflect the extent of the pressures the club is experiencing, while the fans seem to be in a state of increasing anxiety due to the poor performance.
With the “Reds” entering a crucial week in local and European competitions, the Dutch coach will have to find quick solutions before the crisis worsens.
The latest result means that Liverpool, who made 10 changes to their lineup compared to their loss to Brentford in the league, are experiencing their worst run of results in 16 years.
The team has conceded goals in the last 10 consecutive matches in all competitions: 3-2 against “Atletico Madrid,” 2-1 against “Everton,” 2-1 against “Southampton,” 1-2 against “Crystal Palace,” 0-1 against “Galatasaray,” 1-2 against “Chelsea,” 1-2 against “Manchester United,” 5-1 against “Eintracht Frankfurt,” 2-3 against “Brentford,” 0-3 against “Crystal Palace.”
In contrast, Crystal Palace continued its historical superiority over the “Reds,” as it has not lost any encounter against them in 2025, where their meetings ended with the following results: 1-1 (“May 25”), 2-2 then winning on penalties (“August 10”), 2-1 (“September 27”), and 0-3 (“October 29”).
