The weekly session of the National Economy, Industry, Trade, and Planning Committee was held, chaired by MP Professor “Farid Boustani,” with the presence of committee members, the Director-General of the Ministry of Economy, Dr. “Mohammad Abu Haidar,” in addition to representatives from the concerned ministries. During the meeting, the file of protecting national production and ensuring public safety was discussed, with a particular focus on the issue of Tannourine water.
“Boustani” explained after the session that the committee “discussed the file in detail, and reviewed the opinions of experts and representatives of ministries to identify the shortcomings in order to reach a solution that satisfies all parties.”
He also pointed out that the Ministry of Economy announced that it had carried out 17,900 field inspections since the beginning of the year, resulting in the issuance of 476 violation reports related to food safety. He stressed the importance of having a single official body responsible for granting accreditation to laboratories authorized to conduct examinations, with the need to prepare a list that includes the names of accredited laboratories.
He revealed that the committee decided to grant the government a one-month deadline to standardize criteria and develop a unified protocol for laboratories, in addition to establishing a joint national database.
“Boustani” concluded his speech by emphasizing that “the goal is not to punish people but to address the gaps and support the national industry,” stressing that “the Consumer Protection Law will be one of the first laws to be approved in the first public session of Parliament.”
