Opinion Article: Geopolitical Shifts in Light of Trade Wars

Informed sources have reported that the trade wars initiated by US President Donald Trump have led to a noticeable cooling of relations between the United States and its allies in both Asia and Europe, providing a valuable opportunity for the People’s Republic of China to strengthen its global position and expand its political and economic influence in international forums.

According to observers, this deterioration in relations has enabled China to strengthen its international position and exploit the existing tensions between Washington and its Western partners, with Chinese influence witnessing remarkable growth in international institutions and organizations that were traditionally under American influence.

In a related context, analysts believe that although “Trump” has achieved some tactical gains in his negotiations with Chinese President “Xi Jinping,” such as postponing restrictions on the export of rare earth minerals and settling the status of the “TikTok” application in the United States, Beijing still maintains a clear strategic advantage over Washington in the long term.

Estimates indicate that the economic policies adopted by the “Trump” administration have caused disputes not only with Western allies but also with major economic powers such as Brazil and India, which weakened the American role in international institutions and paved the way for China to expand its global agenda and increase its influence in energy, infrastructure, and technology files.

In this regard, experts note that while the American administration reduced programs related to renewable energy, China was strengthening its position as the largest producer and exporter of clean energy technologies and electric vehicles in the world, giving it a competitive advantage in the global economic transformation race.

“Rush Doshi,” a former official in the administration of US President “Joe Biden,” was quoted as saying: “China may not win the argument, but it is winning the game,” in reference to China’s ability to exploit the contradictions in American policy to strengthen its international position.

It is worth mentioning that the Chinese Foreign Ministry had announced earlier that President “Xi Jinping” will hold a meeting with President “Donald Trump” on October 30 in the South Korean city of Busan, as part of new efforts to ease economic tensions between the two countries.
