On Tuesday evening, the US Senate approved a draft resolution aimed at canceling the tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump on Brazil, which include basic commodities such as oil, coffee, and orange juice. This step is considered a test by the Democratic Party of the Republicans’ position on Trump’s trade policy.
This decision came at the initiative of Democratic Senator Tim Kaine from Virginia, and was approved by 52 votes to 48 votes against.
The legislation would end the national emergency that Trump had previously declared to justify imposing 50% tariffs on Brazilian imports.
But it is unlikely that this decision will be implemented, as the Republican-controlled House of Representatives has passed new rules that allow the leadership to prevent legislation from being put to a vote. Even if it passes Congress, President Trump will likely veto it.
