Lebanon Today

Amid escalating Israeli threats towards Lebanon and statements about “Hezbollah’s” readiness to restore its full military readiness, US President Donald Trump’s statement has doubled the tension in the region, stating that “things will be better if we achieve peace through strength.” This phrase summarizes the logic of the current phase, where peace has become contingent on the balance of power, not diplomatic agreements. In this charged atmosphere, Lebanon finds itself once again in the circle of danger, with indicators suggesting the possibility of a return to military escalation.

Journalist and political writer, Asaad Bishara, says in an interview that “There is a convergence, without it being intentional, between Israel and Hezbollah, as the talk about the party restoring its readiness constitutes a prelude to the continuation of the Israeli threat to resume the war.”

He adds that “The issue is not limited to threats or intimidation, but there are real preparations to strike Lebanon. Therefore, Lebanon must act quickly to protect itself again from the danger of destruction and war, and this will only be achieved through the strict implementation of the resolutions of the fifth and seventh of August, and without resorting to the game of buying time or procrastination. When we reach this stage, it can be said that Lebanon has actually protected itself from the renewal of war.”

Regarding the negotiations that the President of the Republic: General Joseph Aoun, talked about, Bishara clarifies that they are “Negotiations stipulated in Article Thirteen of the ceasefire agreement, and are not an invention or a new discovery, nor are they an initiative separate from the agreement itself. Naturally, there is pressure to conduct these negotiations, and Lebanon is capable, if it possesses the tools of negotiation, the first of which is the withdrawal of weapons, to be in a stronger position, otherwise it will remain just a ball on the table being tossed around as it always has been.”
