Lebanon Today

Escalation and warnings have become an integral part of the current scene, but the pace of speeches directed at Lebanon has recently increased significantly, in the context of intense pressure aimed at dragging Lebanon into direct negotiations with Israel with the aim of reaching a security agreement before the end of the year.

“Hassan al-Darr” explained that the Israeli goal is embodied in a security agreement with harsh conditions, including the establishment of a buffer zone with a depth of between three and five kilometers, and a demilitarized zone extending to the Litani River, with the Lebanese army stationed north of it with light weapons only. Al-Darr stressed that Lebanon rejects this proposal and adheres to the cessation of hostilities agreement signed last November, and to the United Nations mechanism that guarantees its implementation.

Al-Darr hinted that the current pressure aims to weaken Lebanon’s position and push it to make concessions, but Hezbollah today is stronger than before. He added: “This does not mean completely ruling out war, but it does not make it inevitable either. We are in the process of negotiating with fire, where Israel uses escalation as a tool of political and field pressure.”

Regarding the possibility of a large-scale confrontation breaking out, “Al-Darr” ruled out the outbreak of a full-scale war before the Pope’s visit to Lebanon next December, with the continued field escalation. He pointed out that the stage following the visit and the beginning of the new year remains unclear.
