Frightening information has been revealed regarding the conditions of Palestinian bodies being held in the Israeli prison “Sde Teiman,” following an exchange of bodies between Hamas and Israel.
The British newspaper “The Guardian” stated that this operation revealed evidence indicating that the bodies of these Palestinians were subjected to torture and mutilation while being held in the aforementioned prison, located in the Negev desert, which has been facing serious accusations of committing grave violations against detainees for months.
The newspaper quoted officials in the Gaza Ministry of Health confirming that at least 135 mutilated bodies of Palestinians returned by Israel to Gaza were kept in the “Sde Teiman” center, which faces accusations of torture and unlawful killing during detention.
Dr. Munir Al-Bursh, Director-General of the Ministry of Health and spokesperson for Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis, explained that documents found inside the body bags written in Hebrew clearly indicate that the remains came from “Sde Teiman,” and that some of them underwent DNA testing inside the base.
Al-Bursh added that the bodies arrived in “terrible conditions,” noting that some of the victims “were blindfolded and handcuffed,” and that forensic examinations showed signs of shooting at close range, field executions, and bodies crushed under Israeli tanks.
According to the report, the Israeli army opened a criminal investigation last year into the deaths of 36 detainees inside “Sde Teiman,” while photos obtained by “The Guardian” – which it refrained from publishing – indicate that some of the bodies were shackled and tied by the neck.
For his part, Iyad Barhoum, the administrative director of the Nasser Medical Complex, stated that the bodies “did not bear names but only symbols,” and that work is currently underway to identify the victims.
In turn, Naji Abbas, Director of the Prisoners and Detainees Department at the organization “Physicians for Human Rights” in Israel, affirmed that “the signs of torture and abuse observed on the bodies are terrifying but not surprising,” stressing the need to open an independent international investigation into this matter.
“The Guardian” presented the body images to an Israeli doctor who witnessed the treatment of prisoners in “Sde Teiman,” who indicated that the color changes in the hands indicate “ischemia resulting from excessive restriction.”
For his part, international forensic expert Morris Tidball-Binz called for the participation of independent forensic experts to identify the victims and verify the causes of death.
In contrast, the Israeli army claimed that the detainees “are treated properly,” and that any allegation regarding misconduct “is examined and addressed in accordance with procedures,” stressing that the military police open investigations in appropriate cases. However, it refrained from commenting on the transfer of Palestinian bodies from “Sde Teiman.”
According to the United Nations, at least 75 Palestinian detainees have died in Israeli prisons since October 7, 2023.
