Hezbollah Rebuilds Capabilities After Suffering Severe Blows in 2023, With Changes That May Pose New Challenges in Missile and Rocket Systems, Drones, and Required Infrastructure.
Press reports indicate that “Hezbollah” has begun rebuilding its military capabilities after the blows it suffered in 2023, focusing on developing its arsenal of missiles, drones, and rockets, and adopting new field operational methods.
According to the reports, this rehabilitation comes after the party “made a mistake” by entering the war in 2023, as it possessed a large arsenal of missiles and rockets, thousands of trained fighters, and a accumulated infrastructure, but Israeli technological, intelligence, and fire superiority significantly weakened these capabilities.
The reports confirm that the party is now working intensively to rebuild its strength, with the introduction of changes that will pose new challenges in three main areas: missile and rocket systems, drones, and the required infrastructure.
They indicate that the party’s classic firepower relied on accurate ballistic missiles and rockets hidden in large launch bases and mobile platforms in southern Lebanon. Although the Israeli army had studied this deployment well, the party seeks to develop these capabilities and overcome the weaknesses revealed by previous confrontations.
The reports point out that some weapons, such as the primitive “Burkan” shells and long-range anti-armor missiles from the “Almas” family, posed a challenge to Israeli defenses. They indicate that the party may prefer to focus on “very smart” missiles and “very dumb” shells instead of a huge artillery stock that does not work efficiently against Israeli defenses.
Regarding air capabilities, the reports mention that Hezbollah’s air unit was equipped with a DR3 cruise missile and large drones such as the “Shahed 129,” but these capabilities were damaged during the confrontations. They indicate that simple suicide drones that hit camps and homes and caused casualties may be the focus of the party in the future, given that they are cheap and easy to operate.
The reports conclude that the confrontation between 2023 and the end of 2024 ended with a “stunning victory” militarily for Israel, but without a new political reality, warning that the party’s return to the size of a “fully armed army” may be easier and cheaper, and that the next round will pose challenges no less than its predecessor.
