Alert on Fraudulent Activities Exploiting the Name of the Cybercrime Bureau
The General Directorate of Internal Security Forces – Public Relations Division issued a statement today, Saturday, stating: “A number of citizens are receiving messages and calls via digital applications or local or international phone calls, whose owners claim to be from the Cybercrime and Intellectual Property Protection Bureau, alleging the existence of a ‘complaint’ or ‘summons’ against the recipient, and then offer to solve the problem in exchange for transferring funds.”
The statement added, “In this context, the General Directorate confirms the following:
– This method is fraudulent and has no connection to the working mechanisms of the mentioned bureau.
– Official notifications are made through the approved legal channels, or through a landline phone call to the mentioned bureau’s number 01-293293.
– The claim of being able to ‘close a file’ or ‘cancel a complaint’ is false, as no entity or person has the ability to do so.”
It continued, “Therefore, we alert citizens to verify any communication claiming an official capacity before interacting with it, and we confirm that the concerned bureau follows up on any reports it receives in accordance with the regulations, provided that direct contact is made regarding any suspicious call or message on the number 01-293293 or on the Internal Security Forces website “Report” service.”
It further stated, “We remind you that there is no other phone number or any account or any website other than the official website of the Internal Security Forces.”
The statement concluded: “The investigation is underway to determine the identity of the perpetrators and those involved, based on the indication of the competent judiciary.”
